In 2010, parents of a young boy left Guatemala for the United States, desperate to earn a living. They had to leave their son, Tomas, behind to be cared for by other family members. Unfortunately, Tomas was abused in these circumstances. He fled the country and came to the U.S. Based on the risk of future abuse if he was returned to Guatemala, NYLAG filed an asylum application on Tomas’s behalf. Thanks to this work, Tomas was granted asylum and will have the opportunity to stay in the U.S.
