NYLAG’s Tenants’ Rights Unit provides a broad range of assistance to low-income tenants. Our goal is to preserve safe and affordable housing for vulnerable residents, prevent homelessness, ensure economic security for families, and promote stability in our communities. We also work to educate community members about their housing rights and provide information on the options available for preserving their homes. Currently, TRU’s work is focused on serving tenants in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Services include representation in court, advocacy before administrative agencies, and negotiations with various parties in the following areas:
- Nonpayments, holdovers and other eviction proceedings in Housing Court
- Obtaining and preserving rent subsidies
- Representing clients at administrative hearings, including NYCHA and Section 8 hearings
NYLAG’s housing attorneys operate out of dozens of offices, including offices located within Housing Court in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, and at community based organizations across the region. Housing Attorneys also provide legal services aboard NYLAG’s Mobile Legal Help Center. The flexibility of this mobile office allows us to reach deep into neighborhoods where housing needs are high but legal services are scarce and difficult to access.
