NYLAG’s LegalHealth division provides technical assistance to professionals and organizations nationwide interested in expanding or establishing medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) in their local communities. By providing legal services at the same location where medical care is delivered, MLPs improve the lives of patients with legal needs that complicate their healthcare.
LegalHealth established the New York State Coalition of Medical-Legal Partnerships to serve a network for hospitals, health clinics, legal service offices, law schools, and others looking to share resources and best practices. The Coalition has become a force for advocacy efforts.
In 2010, the New York State Health Foundation awarded LegalHealth funding for grants to start and expand MLPs throughout the state. These grants have gone to Volunteer Legal Services Project of Monroe County, Inc., Nassau Suffolk Law Services Committee Inc., Syracuse Medical-Legal Partnership and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley.
In 2008, LegalHealth established the National Cancer Legal Services Network to support the provision of legal services for people with cancer throughout the country. In 2012, the NCLSN launched www.nclsn.org to provide the country’s first comprehensive database of legal service providers that can assist with issues related to cancer. The site also includes training and resources for those attempting to start new cancer legal advocacy programs.
