In 1997, NYLAG created a program to assist immigrants with the naturalization process in order to become US citizens.

The program provides comprehensive services including in the area of naturalizationincluding

  • Determinations of eligibility in complex cases
  • Application completion
  • Requests for fee waivers
  • Disability waivers
  • Application management
  • Interview preparation

NYLAG attorneys also provide direct representation at US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) interviews and hearings on appeals. In some cases, attorneys represent clients on individual writ of mandamus actions in Federal Court. Staff also conduct multi-lingual outreach and regular training sessions on citizenship-related topics for non-citizens and social workers. In 2010, IPU hosted a Naturalization Seminar in conjunction with the USCIS.
