NYLAG’s Foreclosure Prevention Project provides outreach and legal assistance to low-income New Yorkers who are facing or at risk of foreclosure.
Typical clients include:
- Victims of predatory lending and loan flipping
- Borrowers burdened with subprime or non-traditional loans
- Homeowners scammed by one-stop shops and loan rescue operations
NYLAG’s Foreclosure Prevention Staff evaluate each client for potential legal claims and defenses and then work to seek affordable loan modifications or other loss mitigation settlements. They also work to defend against judicial foreclosures.
NYLAG collaborates with several local agencies, HUD-certified housing counselors, and other foreclosure prevention advocates. Staff often refer clients to these and other resources. NYLAG attorneys and advocates also provide community education and outreach on issues such as foreclosure prevention, settlement conference practices, and debt counseling.
