Action Alert: Basic needs are at risk due to COVID-19
Protect free legal services that protect individuals and families in need.
We are in unprecedented times. The COVID-19 crisis has put incredible pressure on our state’s budget. State lawmakers are considering reducing funds for programs that are vital to families experiencing poverty or with low-income, including the free legal services offered by NYLAG. This reduction in funding will devastate families, children, and individuals who have sunk further into poverty due to the pandemic.
Who Will Be Harmed By Cuts To Free Legal Services?
As New York prepares for a budget crisis and proposed spending cuts, the funding that NYLAG relies on to provide expert legal services to those who need them most is in jeopardy, impacting:
the immigrant essential worker
the single mother who was working a low-wage job and was laid off
the grandfather battling cancer with a devastating reduction in Managed Long-Term-Care hours
the family unable to pay rent for months due to loss of income
the domestic violence survivor and their children isolated at home with their abuser
This funding threat is happening as desperate calls to our NY COVID-19 Legal Resource Hotline are increasing, and once courts reopen, the need will only become even greater.
Ensure access to justice by supporting free legal services.
Any cuts to civil legal services funding will impact our ability to serve at a time of overwhelming need. We need your help to continue fighting alongside our clients by supporting them with legal services at no cost to them. Can we count on you?
