On March 23, President Donald Trump issued yet another discriminatory memo attempting to ban transgender troops from the military, this time under the guise of banning those trans troops who would require surgery or significant medical treatment from serving in the military, except in select cases. As with the earlier attempt at this ban, NYLAG condemns this action for what it is – the latest move by the Administration to undermine the rights and basic humanity of transgender individuals in the United States. This memorandum goes against the advice of medical experts in the field and data that show minimal costs associated with necessary medical treatments. Trans service members, or those who aspire to a career in the military, are not a burden, they are brave and capable Americans who should be honored for their service and love of country – not humiliated and shamed. This memo is based on nothing more than discrimination. NYLAG continues to support our trans clients in their fight for equal rights.
