Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to Deliver Remarks at the 20th Anniversary Gala of the New York Legal Assistance Group
February 25, 2011 – The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) will hold its first-ever Gala, commemorating its 20th Anniversary, on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo will deliver remarks at this milestone event, which will be held at the historic Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. The Gala will honor Abby S. Milstein, longtime Chair of the NYLAG Board and a Founding Partner of Constantine Cannon LLP; and Sharon L. Allen, Chairman of the Board, Deloitte LLP. Event Co-Chairs are Joseph Polizzotto, General Counsel, Deutsche Bank; Marcia N. Riklis; and Barry Salzberg, Chief Executive Officer, Deloitte LLP.
Founded in1990, NYLAG has never before held a large-scale event to commemorate its achievements and raise funding in support of its mission to provide high quality, free civil legal services to New Yorkers who cannot afford attorneys. NYLAG’s comprehensive range of services includes consumer law, public benefits, eviction and foreclosure prevention, employment law, health care, immigration law, special education, holocaust compensation, elder abuse, advance directives, LGBT rights, and matrimonial and family law, prioritizing domestic violence victims. In addition to more than 100 paid legal staff members, NYLAG leverages the services of over 800 volunteer lawyers, law students, and interns to maximize its impact while training and inspiring the next generation of public interest attorneys. Last year alone, NYLAG served nearly 54,000 individuals.
Under the banner of “Empowering Women & Girls,” the Gala will celebrate NYLAG’s accomplishments in addressing the needs of New York’s low-income women of all ages, ethnicities, and orientations. Over 400 guests are expected to attend the event, which will include a cocktail hour, silent auction, a brief documentary film created by award-winning filmmakers, and a seated dinner program. Jeffrey Toobin, CNN Senior Legal Analyst and Staff Writer for The New Yorker, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Attended by prominent Federal, State and local politicians, individuals and corporations, the Gala is expected to raise substantial funding to support NYLAG’s law projects serving low-income New Yorkers.
