The NYLAG Mobile Legal Help Center is a 41-foot vehicle with four separate areas where attorneys can meet privately with clients, all equipped with computers and high-speed Internet access area, as well as audiovisual technology.

In honor of Pro Bono Celebration Week, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is partnering with The New York State Courts Access to Justice Program to bring civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers aboard NYLAG’s Mobile Legal Help Center.

NYLAG attorneys, paralegals and volunteer attorneys will be on board the Mobile Legal Help Center all week to provide counseling, advice, and direct representation in the five boroughs and Long Island. Joining them will be students from Cardozo School of Law, CUNY School of Law, St. John’s School of Law and Touro Law Center.

In recognition of October as National Domestic Violence Month priority is being given to providing legal services of critical importance to battered women, such as securing civil protection orders rapidly and safely. The Mobile Legal Help Center is equipped to do just that, with a video link to the Courts that enables access to judges for emergency hearings. After electronically exchanging paperwork and interviewing a litigant, the judge can sign and fax the order to the vehicle and the client can walk away with a copy.

“NYLAG is thrilled to bring the Mobile Legal Help Center to communities across the city, in particular to women struggling with domestic violence,” said Yisroel Schulman, President of NYLAG. “Pro Bono Week is a great way to honor the extraordinary work of individual lawyers and dedicated organizations that do so much. It also serves as a grim reminder that thousands of low-income New Yorkers urgently need legal services, but cannot afford to pay for them.”

“We are especially pleased that area law schools are sending their students and graduates to work on the vehicle. They will gain invaluable experience while helping some of New York’s most disadvantaged civil litigants obtain access to justice,” said Judge Fern A. Fisher, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge and Director of NYS Courts Access to Justice Program.
