September 30, 2009, Council Member Erik Martin Dilan (Brooklyn, 37) proclaimed before the city council that September 30th should be “New York Legal Assistance Group Appreciation Day,” and urged “all New Yorkers to recognize the New York Legal Assistance Group for its important work.” Dilan chose to recognize NYLAG during Hispanic Heritage Month, as NYLAG provides “free legal services to approximately 5,000 Hispanic immigrants annually to help them fully and productively integrate themselves into American society.” Attorney Lisa Rivera accepted the signed proclamation and thanked the City Council for its support of free legal services for Hispanic and other low-income immigrants.
