(NEW YORK, NY) December 5, 2019: The Trump administration on Wednesday Dec 5, 2019 formalized work requirements for recipients of food stamps, a move that will cause hundreds of thousands of people to lose access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)’s President & Attorney-in-Charge Beth Goldman has issued the following response:

“This new rule is harmful, targeting people experiencing poverty who are struggling to work or earn a living wage. This includes people with health conditions, individuals experiencing homelessness, and hard-working students trying to build a future for themselves.  Taking away lifesaving food assistance from these individuals doesn’t help them find work, rather it increases hunger and destroys lives. We are deeply concerned about the negative impact this will have on our clients–who are dealing with many crises, including poverty–and having to worry about their next meal could push them further into worsening health conditions, or disaster. At NYLAG, we oppose this rule and are strongly considering potential legal challenges.”
