We help low-income children with special needs attain school placements where they can learn and flourish. NYLAG helped Sonia escape classroom bullying and secure an appropriate education that addressed her learning disability.

Sonia is a 13-year-old student classified as “learning disabled” in the fifth grade. She was reading at a second grade level and seeing a psychiatrist for emotional problems caused by repeated bullying in the classroom. With NYLAG’s help, Sonia’s mother found a private school that offered small classes for learning disabled students in a nurturing environment, but she was unable to afford the tuition.

NYLAG requested an impartial hearing where an attorney successfully demonstrated Sonia’s need for special education services. She is now flourishing at the new school, paid for by the New York City Department of Education.
