We help victims of domestic violence permanently escape their abusers through civil orders of protection, divorce, child support and safe custody arrangements. NYLAG helped Sarah and her children begin a safe and independent life.
Sarah is a mother of two young children who suffered years of physical and emotional abuse from her husband. When she was 8 months pregnant, Sarah’s husband strangled her while threatening her life and the life of their unborn child.
Sarah was forced to go into hiding, and she came to NYLAG seeking safety and a chance to start a new life, free from abuse. With assistance from a NYLAG attorney, she was able to obtain a temporary order of protection against her husband. After the court excluded him from the marital home, Sarah attempted to move back in, only to find that her husband had moved his parents into their apartment instead. With police assistance, Sarah’s in-laws were forced to leave, at which point they sued her for illegal eviction. NYLAG succeeded in getting the case dismissed in Housing Court. Represented by NYLAG attorneys in Family Court, Sarah was awarded a final two-year order of protection for herself and her children directing her husband to stay away from them. While her divorce, custody, visitation, and child support cases are still pending, she is safe and on the road to building a new life for herself and her family.
