MATRIMONIAL & FAMILY LAW

The attorneys in our Matrimonial & Family Law Unit make a difference for low income families experiencing difficult times.  NYLAG provides consultation, advocacy and representation in a wide range of family law issues from experienced, compassionate and culturally sensitive attorneys.  Services include representation in divorces, child custody/ visitation, orders of protection, spousal and child support, and foster care matters.

Victims of domestic violence are prioritized in all cases and we are considered experts in our representation of this population, providing comprehensive and holistic representation.  Civil legal services are of critical importance to battered women. Civil protection orders have been found to be one of the few widely available interventions for victims of domestic violence that has demonstrated effectiveness.  Additionally, though divorce may be one of the most significant events, with some of the longest lasting ramifications in a person’s life, there is no right to a free attorney in the Supreme Court.  NYLAG’s Matrimonial Project is geared to serve litigants who are poor, working poor, or simply without access to the marital assets, who cannot afford to hire counsel.  We handle both contested and uncontested divorces.  Finally, awards of spousal and child support and equitable distribution enable battered women to sustain financial independence, and towards that end, safety.

The Unit also strives to prevent the separation of children from their parent or relative caregiver by representing parents, grandparents, and other relatives where their right to custody is threatened.
